Orbit Poetry Slam with Pages Matam!

Join WITS this Friday, December 12th, for the ORBIT Slam with super-special guest, Pages Matam!. Pages is an award-winning artist, writer, and performance coach who has coached his youth team to #1 at Brave New Voices and his adult team to #1 at the National Poetry Slam. WITS will host a free youth poetry workshop followed by poetry slam. No registration required. Open to ages 13-19. 6:00 – 7:30 pm at Discovery Green Park (1500 McKinney 77010).

It’s National Novel Writing Month 2014

It’s NaNoWriMo — National Novel Writing Month — and this year nearly 400,000 people will try their hand at writing a 50,000 word story. The project has had striking success in recent years:

Over 250 NaNoWriMo novels have been traditionally published. They include Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, Hugh Howey’s Wool, Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl, Jason Hough’s The Darwin Elevator, and Marissa Meyer’s Cinder.See a full list of our published authors.

There’s also a special kids version of the program that is modified for young authors.

Come out to hear Nick Rabkin, the Keynote Speaker, who has more than two decades of experience as an advocate for the arts in public education as well as Featured Speaker James Haywood Rolling Jr., Dual Professor of Art Education and Teaching and Leadership in the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the School of Education at Syracuse University.

Speak! Poet on Sunday

Speak!Poet, the new poetry and interview series, hosts its second event Sunday, July 20, 2-3 p.m. at Brazos Bookstore. Featured readers are WITS Writer Dulce “Digh” Veluthukaran, and Jonathan Moody.

After the two poets read, a discussion will follow with the poets about their work. Speak!Poet is moderated by Winston Derden, who co-produces the event with Stephen Gros. The event is free and open to the public.

Meta-Four Vs. Meta-Four

Join WITS for a Meta-Four Houston poetry slam at 14 Pews on Saturday, July 12, 2014. The event is a free slam poetry competition that is open to the public, featuring four teams vying for bragging rights:

  • Current Meta-Four Houston team
  • Coaches of Meta-Four Houston
  • Space City Slam competitors
  • Students of Slam Camp 2014

This event will begin 3:30 PM at 14 Pews (800 Aurora Street 77009). Donations collected will help send the Meta-Four Houston team to Brave New Voices in Philadelphia (Jul 1620).
