It’s National Novel Writing Month 2014

It’s NaNoWriMo — National Novel Writing Month — and this year nearly 400,000 people will try their hand at writing a 50,000 word story. The project has had striking success in recent years:

Over 250 NaNoWriMo novels have been traditionally published. They include Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, Hugh Howey’s Wool, Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl, Jason Hough’s The Darwin Elevator, and Marissa Meyer’s Cinder.See a full list of our published authors.

There’s also a special kids version of the program that is modified for young authors.

Looking for new innovative ways to reinvigorate your school’s literacy plan? Join Writers in the Schools (WITS) Saturday, October 11th, 8:00am – 3:15pm at Houston Baptist University for the 2014 Fall Writing Festival for Educators and learn how you can teach writing from experience. Tuition is $125 and lunch is included.

The conference is specifically for educators, grades K-12 who want to:

    • Improve their own writing skills
    • Explore new ways of using mentor text
    • Support their students’ writing
    • Experience the WITS method of teaching


Participants will:

  • Attend two workshops
  • Work with professional writers
  • Gain hands-on writing experiences
  • Discuss classroom applications
  • Receive 6 hours of TAGT-approved G/T credit and 6 TEA-approved CPE credit hours

Come out to hear Nick Rabkin, the Keynote Speaker, who has more than two decades of experience as an advocate for the arts in public education as well as Featured Speaker James Haywood Rolling Jr., Dual Professor of Art Education and Teaching and Leadership in the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the School of Education at Syracuse University.
