This traveling visual poetry exhibition was developed through a partnership between Writers in the Schools (WITS) and the Graphic Design Research Initiative (GDRI) team at the University of Houston – Downtown (UHD). The GDRI team used techniques from fields that include concrete poetry, expressive typography, and visual literature, getting inspiration from dada-ism and futurism.
For this collection the GDRI team composed artwork featuring poems from children in the WITS program across Houston. Founded in 1983, WITS is the largest literary organization in Texas. WITS professional authors engage children in the pleasure and power of reading and writing, awakening students to the adventures of language. WITS believes in the importance of the imagination and the strength of stories. By finding innovative ways to bring stories to life, WITS ignites a love of learning in children, better preparing them for the future.
Painters use strokes and color schemes to express emotions on the canvas. Writers use words and stories to communicate emotion on the page. This exhibition celebrates the intersection of both worlds.
