Tonight WITS honors Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson for her commitment to engaging families in reading and writing, fostering a literary arts community in Houston. Dr. Lawson is the Director of the Houston Public Library, the largest public library in Texas and the seventh in the nation. WITS and the Houston Public Library have partnered together for years, providing free, accessible creative writing workshops across the city. Additionally, WITS and the Houston Public Library worked together on the Poet Laureate program and Public Poetry, which spotlights citywide readings by Houston youth and adult poets at public venues and libraries. Dr. Lawson is keenly focused on ensuring that public libraries are fully supported and remain essential to the quality of life in communities.
