We live in a creative world where ideas, collaboration, and adaptability are a must–and writing is essential. So how do we prepare our children for their future? How do we ensure that they become thoughtful leaders for change, passionate learners, and curious thinkers we need to improve our world? Through Writers in the Schools programs, young people discover the power within themselves to create, innovate, and connect with others.
WITS programs work because we approach writing as an exploration. Students will begin to see feel the power that comes for clear self-expression. Whether they’re not sure how to get started or they already write a million pages a day, they’ll feel at home writing here. This is where the spark of creativity begins.
The Only Place Where Children Learn from Talented Writers and Educators
Many have Masters and PhDs in education. Others are award-winning writers, nationally-ranked performers, and widely-published poets. Our instructors are experts at teaching creative writing. And they’re ready to help your child shine.
Creative Writing Camp is a collaboration between Writers in the Schools and Rice University’s School Literacy and Culture and has inspired young writers for over 30 years. Our online and in-person camps deep dive into writing topics that hone creativity and prepare students for future success. With low student-teacher ratios and mentorship from professional writers, Creative Writing Camp offers a writer’s workshop experience!

J Camps at Evelyn Rubenstein JCC Houston give children an opportunity to learn by reading literature and practicing writing in a work as published authors. Campers demonstrate improved reading and writing skills, increased confidence, and enhanced creativity. We focus on the writing process and address original voice, inventive word choice, sentence fluency, and clear organization. WITS workshops build skills in reading and analysis, expose students to multi-cultural literature, and emphasize the importance of revision. At the end of the week, campers will share their finished pieces in a celebration and will take home a portfolio of their work.
ExploreAsia: Culture Camp for Kids – In these week-long sessions in partnership with Writers in the Schools (WITS), campers will have the chance to explore character, setting, and story structure in order to generate their own plays or stop-motion animation films! Each day will feature inspiration from Asian mythology, time for improvisation, and revision. Campers will culminate in a showcase on the final day of camp.
Duchesne Heart of the Summer – The WITS Writers Workshop at Duchesne is designed to get students excited about writing. Writers Workshop follows classic writing workshop guidelines to provide constructive feedback to a writer in a small group setting. The goal is not to tell others how to write their essays/ poems/ stories, but rather to take the work on its own terms, describing the piece and offering constructive criticism based on what we perceive to be the writer’s intentions. The workshop will focus on the writing process and address key objectives in language arts, including original voice, inventive word choice, sentence fluency, and clear organization.
Writing Camp in partnership with the University of Houston Downtown is the place for young writers looking to find or develop their voices. The courses range from skills for beginning writers to skills for students who are preparing to enter college.
