We are excited to invite you to Building New Paths, a retreat dedicated to fostering a space for critical dialogue within the performance poetry community. This retreat will be a day to promote creative development while creating new connections with the thriving community of performers, educators, and organizers.

Workshops and Panel Conversations:

  • Hybridity: Everything That Can Happen, Will Happen Gorgeously – a generative creative writing workshop led by Joshua Nguyen exploring the brief history of common (or uncommon) poetic forms originating from the East (zuihitsu, haibun, lac bat, etc.)
  • Classroom Co-authorship and K-Pop: Fandom as Poetic Vocabulary – a pedagogy workshop led by Bill Moran taking a closer look at Paolo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed, and how centering the interests of marginalized voices in our classrooms can work to humanize and empower.
  • Building Community with Performance Poetry – a panel conversation with Amir Safi from Write About NowHouston Poet Laureate Deborah DEEP MoutonJasminne Mendez of Tintero Project, and Erika Jo Brownfrom Poison Pen. Moderated by Natty Carrizosa.
