What if we all were free to be, like a child? Who would you be? An artist? An astronaut? Now, imagine if every child had a teacher who allowed them to be curious, confident, and creative. In a world where rules and standards dominate our educational conversations, WITS is a powerful solution for igniting creativity in our community. We invite you to support the WITS Free to Be Gala. This event has grown so much that we are heading over to The Astorian, an industrial-chic venue in the heart of the Washington Avenue Arts District. We will celebrate the stories of children, hear poetry performances, present Houston’s new Youth Poet Laureate, and play games together. Most importantly, this event will be FUN with proceeds benefiting the WITS work of engaging children in the art of writing.
We will honor Sara Speer Selber with the Free to Be Award. Sara is a former WITS parent, collaborator, and social justice advocate. She passionately promotes poetry and spends each day making a meaningful difference for the people and places of Houston. As the former leader of AIDS Foundation Houston, Sara partnered with WITS to launch Camp Hope, the first camp for HIV-positive children. That was 20 years ago; and today Sara is even more fiercely committed to WITS as a champion of performance poetry for teens.
