Former WITS Writer Janine Joseph is the writer behind “On This Muddy Water,” which is premiering in Houston on December 10th. Here’s more information from the Houston Grand Opera about this new work that commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Houston Ship Channel:
On This Muddy Water: Voices from the Houston Ship Channel Wednesday, December 10, at 5:30 p.m. : World Premiere + Opening Reception Wednesday, December 17, at 5:30 p.m. Tudor Gallery, Julia Ideson Library 550 McKinney Street, Houston FREE Admission!   Your first two chances to hear Houston Grand Opera’s newest song cycle are just around the corner! Join HGOco this month for the world premiere performances of On This Muddy Water: Voices from the Houston Ship Channel. Composed by D. J. Sparr and with words by Janine Joseph, this 30-minute song cycle was commissioned to celebrate the Ship Channel’s centennial. Through voice and chamber ensemble, the piece creates a compelling portrait of the people at the heart of one of Houston’s most vibrant centers of industry. It is presented in connection with the Stories of a Workforce exhibit on view at the Julia Ideson Library through January 2015. Additional free performances of On This Muddy Water will take place January 7 and January 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Julia Ideson Library. Each performance will be preceded by a brief conversation with a member of the Ship Channel community. Advance registration not required; guests will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis.
