WITS fuels the creative economy of Houston. The 190 WITS writers are educators and professional novelists, poets, playwrights, and essayists with extensive teaching experience.

I Wish I'd Written That

Many are bilingual, have graduate degrees, and are published authors. Once WITS writers finish their residency, many go on to start their own WITS programs through the WITS Alliance or achieve prominent writing careers.

WITS Alliance

In 1992 WITS replicated its local success through the WITS Alliance, an international network of 31 independently-run sister organizations. The vision of the WITS Alliance is that every American child will have the opportunity to work with a professional writer to develop the tools necessary for success. Led and administered by WITS, this network enables replication, mentorship, shared knowledge, and leveraged resources, building the capacity of literary arts organizations that collectively reach 100,000 children. The WITS Alliance helps organizations leverage resources, share knowledge, and initiate national dialogue to further creative classrooms. This program reaches 750 writers internationally and has a strong presence at the 13,500-person Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) conference.

Benefits to Sister Organizations
By sharing their experience and expertise, The WITS Alliance members help each other and other organizations to become stronger and more effective, serving more children. Specifically, partner programs benefit from:

  • Access to experts in this field
  • Models for training and evaluation
  • Professional development and leadership training
  • Educational resources, legal documentation, reference materials
  • Opportunities for collaboration with a circle of mentors and peers
  • Recognition, shared marketing materials and publicity
  • Validation and credibility through the power of a shared vision
